EU GREEN STEELMAKING: Salzgitter starts wind-power hydrogen production

German steelmaker Salzgitter has started operations at its Wind Hydrogen project for hydrogen production from electricity generated by wind power, the company announced on Thursday March 11.

In partnership with Avacon and gas producer Linde, Wind Hydrogen Salzgitter, WindH2, is part of the company's plans to decarbonize the steel industry through the SALCOS (SAlzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking technology) project.

Avacon, part of the E.ON Group, operates seven newly built wind turbines on the site with combined output of 30MW. Salzgitter Flachstahl has installed two Siemens 1.25MW PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) electrolyzer units that are capable of producing around 450 cubic meters per hour of ultra-pure hydrogen.
