EU GREEN STEELMAKING: Thyssenkrupp Steel partners with TSR Recycling to use scrap in blast furnace

German steelmaker Thyssenkrupp has signed a joint letter of intent with recycler TSR to explore the use of high-quality scrap in its blast furnaces to reduce carbon emissions, the company said on Monday May 17.

The use of recycled raw materials in blast furnaces helps to strengthen the circular economy, reduces use of carbon-containing reducing agents and decreases carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, according to Thyssenkrupp.
TSR has developed an innovative production process, in which a high-quality recycling product - with clearly defined properties and high iron content - is made from common recovered scrap. The challenge for this process consists of removing some undesired attended materials from the iron by targeted separation, so that the product is then suitable as a certified raw material for the blast furnace process and can be used sustainably.
