EU STEELMAKER CLOSURES 07/05: Italian steel producers resume production in May

Italian steel producers have begun to restart their operations after the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown measures were eased in the country from the start of this week, Fastmarkets heard on Thursday May 7.

European steelmakers reduced output and temporarily idled equipment in March and April due to the poor demand under the lockdown conditions and other quarantine measures implemented across the region, with the intention of preventing the spread of the Covid-19 infection.
Long steel producers, including AFV Beltrame, Ferriera Valsabbia, Pittini Group and Riva Group, have resumed operations, market sources said.
But the mills have been operating at low production rates due to limited demand, according to market participants.

ArcelorMittal Italia planned to partially restart its equipment from May 11, market sources told Fastmarkets. The company did not respond to a request for additional information regarding the restart...
