EU STEELMAKER CLOSURES 21/05: ArcelorMittal pauses Bosnia operations, SSAB extends layoffs

ArcelorMittal has temporarily stopped operations at its steel mill in Bosnia while Sweden's SSAB has decided to extend layoffs at some of its productions assets in the week to Thursday May 21.

The decisions were made in a response to a drastic decline in steel demand across Europe due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

ArcelorMittal decided to stop production at its Zenica plant for 10 days starting from May 19.
"From the beginning of the year until March, we were safely working at full capacity," ArcelorMittal Zenica said. "However, from May 19, in order to align production with demand, a decision has been taken to temporarily stop the plant's production for 10 days."
