EUROPE STAINLESS STEEL: Base prices steady; stock sell-off likely to beat lower October surcharges

Base prices for both flat and long stainless steel products in Europe were unchanged in the week ended Friday September 7, but mills and distributors were offering material from stock at large discounts ahead of an expected fall in the alloy surcharge for October deliveries.

Metal Bulletin's weekly domestic base price assessment for 2mm, grade-304 cold-rolled (CR) stainless steel sheet in Northern Europe was unchanged over the week at ?,?1,000-1,050 ($1,163-1,221) per tonne delivered on Friday.At the same time, the weekly price assessment for grade-316 CR stainless steel bases prices in Europe also held steady at ?,?1,300-1,350 per tonne.But grade-304 CR sheet was being offered from stock at transaction prices around ?,?2,300 per tonne delivered, compared with ?,?2,503-2,573 per tonne when combining the base price with September's alloy surcharge.Similarly, grade-316 CR material was being offered around ?,?3,450 per tonne from stock, compared with ?,?3,551-3,636 per tonne when combining...
