RAPAPORT... Marvin Heyman, president of jewelry manufacturer and brand Oscar Heyman & Brothers for 14 years, died on February 23 at the age of 89.Heyman began his career with the family-run firm started by his uncle in 1953, working as a bench jeweler in the shop as well as in the company's diamond office. After 10 years, he moved to the workshop alongside his father, Harry Heyman, becoming assistant shop foreman. He began running the company's factory in 1977, and became its president in 2001, a role he held until his retirement in 2015."He loved the industry and the craftsmen who make it all possible," said Tom Heyman, his nephew. "I believe he was happiest working next to a craftsman, figuring out how to make a complicated piece of Oscar Heyman jewelry."A devoted member of his community, Heyman was a founding member of Bachurei Chemed Jewish Center in Long Beach, New York, and president of Temple Beth Israel in Port Washington, New York. As chairman of the Community Action Council, and through his work for the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) Federation of New York, Heyman devoted himself to working toward racial equality and fair housing, and fighting anti-Semitism.Heyman is survived by three of his four children, Jon, Ben and Ruth, as well as grandchildren Jacob, Leah, Roxanne, Ruby and Maxim.Image: Marvin Heyman.
