(IDEX Online) - GIA says it aims to combat "cloned diamond" fraud by offering same-day verification of its inscriptions. The move comes as an increasing number of lab growns are being fraudulently submitted for re-grading. They are cut to match the specifications of natural diamonds that have already been graded and inscribed with either with a GIA number (genuine or fake).GIA says that from next week it will be offer same-day confirmation that a GIA inscription matches the inscribed GIA report number."Combatting this fraud is vital to protecting the public and ensuring their confidence in gems and jewelry - this is GIA's mission," said GIA president and CEO Susan Jacques."We, like Tiffany, Cartier and other well-known global companies who are vigilant about protecting their valuable brands from counterfeiting and fraud, will take vigorous action to protect GIA and the trust consumers place in us."GIA says it will take legal action to ensure perpetrators and their accomplices face justice.Pic courtesy GIA of a diamond inscription
