The Metals:

Gold fell $4.80 to $1324.20 in Asia before it chopped up to $1333.00 in late morning New York trade, but it then drifted back lower into the close and ended with a loss of 0.2%. Silver slipped to as low as $16.908 and ended with a loss of 0.47%.

Euro gold fell to about EUR1084, platinum gained $0.50 to $1000, and copper climbed a penny to about $3.20.

Gold and silver equities dropped throughout most of the day and ended almost 2% lower.

Tomorrow brings Consumer Sentiment.

The Markets:

Oil pared early losses to end near unchanged after the Energy Information Administration reported that crude inventories fell 6.9 million barrels, gasoline inventories rose 3.6 million barrels, and distillates fell 3.9 million barrels.

The U.S. dollar index edged lower on continued concerns about a possible government shutdown.

Treasuries fell on profit taking.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P traded mostly lower on concerns about rising interest rates.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Amazon, Airbus, GNC, Alcoa, Morgan Stanley, Apple, and Netflix.
