The Metals:

Gold fell $7.70 to $1315.40 by midday in New York before it bounced back higher into the close, but it still ended with a loss of 0.42%. Silver slipped to as low as $16.425 and ended with a loss of 0.24%.

Euro gold rose above EUR1088, platinum lost $9 to $906, and copper dropped a penny to about $3.12.

Gold and silver equities traded mostly slightly higher and ended with modest gains.

The Economy:

U.S. Jobless Claims Slump on Return of New York School Workers Bloomberg

U.S. trade deficit in goods drops in March for first time in seven months MarketWatch

U.S. business spending on equipment slowing; job market strong Reuters

Tomorrow brings GDP, Chicago PMI, and Consumer Sentiment.

The Markets:

Oil rose on concerns about new sanctions for Iran.

The U.S. dollar index climbed higher as the euro fell after the ECB maintained its pledge to move slowly in removing euro-area stimulus.

Treasuries bounced back from recent losses on disappointing economic data.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P gained roughly 1% on strong earnings reports.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Barclays, Deutsche Bank, ConocoPhillips, Ford, GM, Fiat Chrysler, Chipotle, Amazon, eBay, and Facebook.
