The Metals:

Gold gained $4.80 to $1283.00 by a little after 8AM EST before it dropped back to $1277.90 in the next four hours of trade, but it then chopped back higher into the close and ended with a gain of 0.11%. Silver rose to as high as $17.634 and ended with a gain of 0.29%.

Euro gold rose to about EUR1137, platinum gained $1 to $951, and copper fell a couple of cents to about $2.56.

Gold and silver equities waffled near unchanged and ended mixed.

The Markets:

Oil ended lower in mixed trade on uncertainty about Middle East oil production after Saudi Arabia and three other countries cut ties with Qatar.

The U.S. dollar index edged higher as the euro drifted lower ahead of this week's ECB meeting.

Treasuries fell on profit taking from last week's gains.

The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P closed with modest losses on diplomatic and political uncertainty.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Forestar, Harley-Davidson, Uber, Facebook, and Deutsche Bank.
