The Metals:

Gold fell $24.80 to $1288.70 by midafternoon in New York before it bounced back higher into the close, but it still ended with a loss of 1.6%. Silver slipped to as low as $16.204 and ended with a loss of 1.45%.

Euro gold fell to about EUR1091, platinum lost $10 to $898, and copper dropped 3 cents to about $3.05.

Gold and silver equities fell over 2% at the open and remained near that level for the rest of the day.

The Markets:

Oil rose 0.5% on continued concerns about unrest in the Middle East.

The U.S. dollar index found notable gains as treasuries fell along with the Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P after this morning's batch of economic data renewed inflation concerns.

Among the big names making news in the market today were Tyson Foods, Walmart, Macy's, and Home Depot.
