New York spot gold gained $18.20 to $1,346.80 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.72 point to 817.80 while the TSX Gold Index jumped 5.15 points to 187.71. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) led Canadian gold miners higher today, adding $2.09 to $53.86 on 1.54 million shares. Kinross Gold Corp. (K) was also strong. It rose 29 cents to $4.96 on 8.85 million shares. Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) was not. It lost three cents to $1.17 on 9.37 million shares.
Andy Wallace and Robert Giustra's Allegiant Gold Ltd. (AUAU), down two cents to 54 cents on 102,000 shares, has added a second drill rig to its exploration program at the Eastside gold project in Nevada. The original rig continues to test the western extension of the Original Zone deposit, which has already been extended 300 metres during the current program. The second rig is being set up to test the southern extension of the Original Zone deposit. Mr. Wallace, chief executive officer, says that it will step out up to 400 metres from the currently defined southern edge of the deposit, in an area where surface sampling has returned encouraging gold assays.While the western and southern areas are the current focus, Mr. Wallace points out that Original Zone is also open to the east and at depth, and possibly to the north,in other words, everywhere.
