New York spot gold fell $20.10 to $1,324.40 on Wednesday. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 18.61 points to 784.22 while the TSX Gold Index fell 3.55 points to 184.04. Most Canadian gold miners lost ground today, some taking a big hit. Premier Gold Mines Ltd. (PG) was one; it dropped 21 cents to $2.73 on 1.65 million shares. Franco Nevada Corp. (FNV) was another. It lost $3.63 to $86.61 on 1.45 million shares.
Duncan Middlemiss's Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (WDO), unchanged at $1.91 on 3.69 million shares, has received new assays from underground drifting at its Eagle River mine in Wawa, which it has been running since 1995. The two-year-old drifting program is chasing the No. 7 and No. 300 zones, which are 200 metres and 400 metres north, respectively, of the main No. 8 zone, which has produced over one million ounces so far. Drifting at the 1022 level has produced assays of up to 20.21 grams of gold per tonne over an average width of 2.2 metres along a strike length of 122.8 metres. The better grades were to the east, rather than the west, with an average of 28.33 grams per tonne over an average width of 1.8 metres along a 75.5-metre strike length. Encouraging grades were also obtained from drifting at several other levels, from 890 metres to 1006 metres.
