New York spot gold lost $3.30 to $1,321.60 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 2.47 points to 829.47 while the TSX Gold Index fell 0.55 point to 181.40. Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG) led Canadian gold miners lower, again, dropping 32 cents to $9.17 on 443,000 shares. Alacer Gold Corp. (ASR) was strong, gaining six cents to $2.11 on 490,000 shares.

Matthew Hornor's Maple Gold Mines Ltd. (MGM), down one-half cent to 24 cents on 487,000 shares, has received the fourth and final permit required for its drill program at Douay, north of Val d'Or in Quebec. The company now has five drill rigs on the property and is ramping up the program to cover several new targets. Mr. Hornor, president and chief executive officer, says that Douay hosts several known higher-grade plums with variable diameters that have seen just limited follow-up drilling. Therefore, he says, these areas offer a big opportunity to add higher-grade gold to the deposit. Mr. Hornor says that the company spent a lot of time last year generating drill targets and it will be testing the most exciting ones.
