(Kitco News) - Harmony Gold Mining todayreported that an employee was fatally injured on Sunday afternoon, following ashaft-related incident, at its Doornkop mine, near Soweto in the Gautengprovince of South Africa.
"We are deeply concernedabout the unfortunate incidents at our mines and will continue to drive oursafety humanistic transformation initiative, to reinforce a proactive safetyculture throughout our company," CEO Peter Steenkamp said.
The board, executives andmanagement of Harmony extend their prayers to the families, friends and colleaguesof the deceased, the company added.
"The relevant authorities andstakeholders have been informed. Mining activity in the affected area has beenceased while an investigation is underway," Harmony Gold said in a statement.
Harmony Gold Mining, a seniorgold mining and exploration company, has operations and assets in South Africaand Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The company's assets includeone open pit mine and several exploration tenements in PNG, as well as 9underground mines and 1 open pit operation and several surface sources in SouthAfrica. In addition, Harmony owns 50% of the significant Wafi-Golpu copper-goldproject - a tier 1 asset - in a joint venture in PNG.
