(IDEX Online) - Diamond manufacturer Shairu Gems says it has become first in India to achieve carbon-neutral status.The Mumbai-based company has been financing emission reduction programs to offset its own carbon emissions.In 2014 the company won international recognition for building the world's first energy-efficient diamond factory (pictured), in Surat.Shairu, a De Beers sight holder with more than 2,000 employees, says sustainability is "the right thing to do".It has been certified as meeting the requirements of The CarbonNeutral Protocol after its own emissions were independently assessed - including third party transporters, distributors, business travel and employees' commuting."Being an environmentally friendly business has always been a key pillar of our corporate philosophy," said company director Siddharth Mehta."We increasingly see luxury consumers assessing the social and environmental impact of their purchase decisions. "Our pursuit for positive climate action will only benefit our retail partners in meeting their luxury consumers' needs."
