Indian steel sector an 'essential service', major port declares force majeure amid lockdown

India's steel sector will not come under any restriction during the country's 21-day lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), though mills continue to face various uncertainties with regard to the move.

The steel ministry, in a letter addressed to the sector seen by Fastmarkets, said it was aware of problems faced by the country's steelmakers with regard to the entry of workers, supply of raw material and the delivery of finished steel, which was likely to have an adverse effect not only the operations of these steel plants but also on their machinery.
The ministry noted that India's Essential Services Maintenance Act lists any service in the establishment or undertaking or dealing with the production, supply or distribution of coal, power, steel or fertilizers as an "essential service." As such, no restrictions shall be imposed on the operation of steel plants, it said.
