INTERVIEW: Rusal to outline net-zero carbon roadmap in September

Inert anode technology is one of several methods UC Rusal will use to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with the company to lay out a roadmap on its path forward in September, a senior executive at the aluminium producer told Fastmarkets.

According to Roman Andryushin, company head of sales and marketing, the roadmap will not just focus on reducing emissions across Rusal's smelting operations but also on other areas of the supply chain - including bauxite mining and alumina refining, melting and casting as well as recycling transportation and water management.
Andryushin told Fastmarkets in an interview on Tuesday April 13 that he expected Rusal, the aluminium business of EN+ Group, to reach its climate goals - which include reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 35% by 2030 and achieving net-zero carbon by 2050 - sooner than targeted.
"The end goal is for 100% of our capacity to be carbon-free by 2050; there's no doubt that it'll be sooner than then. I do believe the industry has to recommit itself to shorter deadlines," he said.
