KCM's NChanga copper mine collapses; smelter still at work

Part of the Nchanga copper mine in Zambia collapsed during the morning of Wednesday July 15, as operator Konkola Copper Mines had earlier predicted that it would.

The cave-in happened at 8:30am local time, affecting 3 million tonnes of material in an area 370 metres around the epicenter of failure in the open-pit Nchanga mine, KCM said on Wednesday.
It had previously forecast that the collapse would occur no later than July 7.
