LatAm steel association opposes rebar duty cut in Colombia

Latin American steel association Alacero is concerned about a potential flood of Chinese and Turkish rebar in Colombia if a request to cut or eliminate import duties is granted amid recent increases in local capacity, it said on Monday September 20.

Opening up the Colombian market to more imports was deemed unnecessary by Alacero, given current supply and demand fundamentals. Moreover, the association reports signs of inventory building in recent months.
"We believe [such a request] has circumstantial reasons, but it also has an impact on structural matters, like employment and investments [in Colombia]," Alacero's general director Alejandro Wagner said. "And it is not about a domestic situation, but regional and global circumstances."
