LME WEEK 2020: GFG Alliance's Gupta calls for sustainably-led 'reinvention' of steel, aluminium sectors

In the next 30 years, global demand for both aluminium and steel is likely to double. Against industry calls for a cleaner, more forward-looking supply-chain, however, the chairman and chief executive of GFG Alliance, Sanjeev Gupta, sees climate change as the key accelerator for a sustainability-led reinvention of the sector.

Delivering his welcoming address at this year's virtual LME Week seminar, Gupta cited the London Metal Exchange's recent efforts to build-in responsible sourcing across its processes, noting that growing demand needed a low-carbon supply.
In driving the changes, Gupta noted GFG's own increasing efforts to centralize low-carbon aluminium production in Europe - or 'green aluminium' - through efforts such as the launch of its integrated aluminium vertical, Alvance, in addition to upcoming solar and wind power projects in Spain.
In October 2019, GFG Alliance undertook a similar consolidation, streamlining its steel business into a single entity called Liberty Steel Group, and adopting a carbon-neutral business strategy.
