Major foreign miners in DRC unfair to criticize chamber of commerce, FEC says

Major international mining companies active in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) previously supported work on the new mining code by the country's Chamber of Commerce and are unfair to criticize the association, it said.

The country's largest foreign miners, including Randgold Resources, AngloGold Ashanti, Glencore plc, Ivanhoe Mines, Gold Mountain International/Zijin Mining Group, MMG (PTY) Ltd and China Molybdenum Co Ltd (CMOC), resigned last week from the association, known as the Federation of Enterprises (FEC), saying it did not adequately represent their interests. Representatives of these companies are in the DRC capital, Kinshasa, for talks with the government to resolve their dispute over the new mining code. But the FEC said in a statement that many of these miners backed the results of various meetings held between the government, civil society and private sector to find agreement on the proposed mining code, while simultaneously failing to deliver promised revenues to the state.
