Metals sector warns EU that energy costs may cause producers to quit Europe

European non-ferrous metals industry association Eurometaux has warned the European Commission that surging power prices may cause metal producers to leave Europe and erode plans to cut carbon emissions.

"Rising electricity prices have already led to curtailments and could lead to further relocation of our sector outside Europe if not addressed," Eurometaux said in a letter co-signed by director general Guy Thiran and president Mikael Staffas.
"We're also concerned that if electricity remains too expensive it will disincentivize industrial electrification as a decarbonization route, undermining the EU's Green Deal objectives," the letter, sent to European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and seen by Fastmarkets, read.

Non-ferrous metals, such as aluminium, copper, nickel, zinc and silicon, are at the "frontline of those industries impacted by high electricity prices in Europe" because they are more electricity-intensive to produce than any other material, said Eurometaux, whose members include Norsk Hydro, Boliden, Eramet, Rio Tinto and...
