More jobs cut at Vale Canada as Manitoba ops reshaped

Vale Canada has cut 154 jobs at its Thompson, Manitoba nickel operation, which was losing about C$300,000 ($225,700) a day, a company spokesman told Fastmarkets.

Vale has for years been restructuring its operations in the subarctic Canadian province, having closed the Manitoba nickel smelter and refinery in July 2018, but retained the two mines and milling activities.
"The steps taken were completed with an eye towards creating a long-term, sustainable future for our Manitoba operations," Vale spokesman Cory McPhee on said on Monday November 2.
"Our Manitoba Operations lost, on average, C$300,000 a day in 2019 - a reality that was shared with union officials, community leaders and provincial stakeholders well in advance."
