National Science Foundation highlights Illangasekare's scientific workshop on mysterious kidney disease

Rice paddy in Sri LankaA scientific workshop on chronic kidney disease of unknown causes, or CKDu, organized by Tissa Illangasekare, AMAX Distinguished Chair of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Colorado School of Mines, was recently highlighted by the National Science Foundation.

The NSF-funded workshop in Sri Lanka brought together hydrologists, engineers, occupational medicine specialists, social scientists and environmental health scientists to visit agricultural districts in the country's North Central Province, "ground zero" for the growing health issue.

The incidence of the disease has increased dramatically in the country's North Central Province (NCP). The NCP lies in Sri Lanka's dry zone, where freshwater is limited. ?EUR?

"CKDu is fast becoming an epidemic there," says hydrologist Tissa Illangasekare of the Colorado School of Mines.
