Nespresso will become the first company to use responsibly-sourced aluminium, provided by Rio Tinto, to produce its coffee capsules, marking yet another signal of customer-driven demand for sustainable products.
The aluminium, which will be certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), is being supplied under a Memorandum of Understanding to work together with the Nestl?(C) unit's capsule manufacturers to source 100% sustainable aluminium by 2020. The ASI's Chain of Custody Standard creates a traceability mechanism, so that end users such as Nespresso can be sure the aluminium they purchase has been manufactured by ASI-certified producers at each stage of the process. The ASI sets out standards to promote the protection of biodiversity, respect for indigenous peoples' rights, water management and low-carbon emissions during the production of aluminium.
