New Alunorte court date set for April 12; judge considers third-party assessments

The federal court in Bel?(C)m, in the northern Brazilian state of Par??, has scheduled a second conciliatory hearing on April 12 to discuss the production embargo of Norsk Hydro's Alunorte alumina refinery.

The first hearing took place on Thursday April 4, with Norsk Hydro and Brazil's federal prosecutors' office (MPF) producing information to the judge regarding the progress of the ongoing third-party assessments of two external reports on Alunorte. The two external reports by Par??'s state environmental agency, SEMAS, and a Brazilian university both concluded that the refinery can safely resume normal operations, having been at 50% of capacity for over a year.
