New EAF, DRI facility planned for GFG's Whyalla steelworks

GFG Alliance announced transformation plans for its Whyalla steelworks facility while it tries to secure its long-term future after reviewing its current performance, the company said on Wednesday June 10.

The plans include a direct reduced iron (DRI) facility to produce low-emission Greensteel from GFG's abundant South Australian magnetite resources and domestic steel scrap as well as a new electric arc furnace (EAF) in a bid to become a world-leading, carbon-neutral steel producer, GFG said.
The Greensteel strategy focuses on investing in and using EAFs powered with renewable energy to recycle domestic steel scrap, Fastmarkets understands.
The new DRI plant will use natural gas before transitioning to green hydrogen that GFG's renewable energy projects -including Cultana, one of Australia's largest solar farms being built in Whyalla - have produced, the company said.
