Nickel: Key takeaways from Jakarta

Earlier this month, MBR attended MB’s 6th Asian Nickel conference in Jakarta, where we gave presentations on the outlook for stainless steel and Li-ion batteries. Here we provide some key takeaways from the event: On batteries. Nickel demand from the Li-ion battery sector is expected to surge fivefold over the next 6-7 years, rising rapidly from the current 100,000 tpy to 500,000 tpy by 2025. Nickel use will be amplified by the market shifting toward more nickel-weighted batteries, such as the NCM 811 – a cathode composition of 80% nickel, 10% cobalt and 10% manganese. On nickel sulfate: In turn, nickel sulfate producers are expected to ramp up output to meet growing demand from the EV sector.
