Ontario Supporting Indie Cinema in Sudbury
Ontario is supporting Canadian, independent and international films by investing in the establishment of an independent cinema in downtown Sudbury.
Through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the province is supporting Sudbury Indie Cinema as it renovates the gymnasium of the former St. Louis de Gonzague School into a cinema and multi-use arts venue. This investment will help to modernize the venue with new amenities, including lighting, an air and heating system, theatre seating, and digital projection equipment.
The new Sudbury Indie Cinema will support the growing arts and culture sector in Northern Ontario and provide a space for festival-quality films to be showcased to the community.
Bolstering arts and culture in the North is part of Ontario's plan to create fairness and opportunity during this period of rapid economic change. The plan includes a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, easier access to affordable child care, and free prescription drugs for everyone under 25 through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation.

Ontario is investing $292,825 in this project through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).The NOHFC has supported the growth of film and television production in Northern Ontario by providing more than $85.6 million to 139 projects since 2013. This has leveraged more than $397 million in direct economic activity. Since 2013, the province has invested more than $593 million through the NOHFC in over 3,745 projects, leveraging more than $2.1 billion in direct economic activity and creating or sustaining over 15,100 jobs in Northern Ontario.In the Greater Sudbury area, the NOHFC has invested more than $119 million in 741 projects that have helped create or retain more than 2,360 jobs since 2013.Additional Resources
