Russian mining major Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel) told Fastmarkets that it is operating as normal during the Covid-19 pandemic, but for extending workers' hours at the fledgling Bystrinsky GOK mine in Chita, Siberia. This while mining conglomerates including other leading nickel producers, such as Vale and Glencore, reduce their output because of the pandemic.

Nornickel, the world's top nickel and palladium producer, had credited the co-owned Bystrinsky copper, gold and iron mine, commissioned in September 2019, with its increased overall base metals production and record annual copper output last year. Nornickel's copper production hit 499,000 tonnes in 2019, up by 5% from 2018.
"There are not any restrictions at our sites. All Nornickel operations are carried out as business as usual, including Bystrinsky GOK," Nornickel spokeswoman Tatyana Egorova told Fastmarkets.
