Fifty years ago, Golden residents buried a time capsule in front of City Hall, next to the city's Liberty Bell, with instructions that it be opened on Nov. 11, 2018. It was the city's second time capsule, the first buried in 1918 to commemorate the end of World War I and opened 50 years later on Nov. 11, 1968. Flash forward to today, and Veteran's Day 2018. As part of the city's celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI, officials unearthed the 1968 time capsule and discovered a treasure trove of documents that tell the story of Golden, Colorado, as it was 50 years ago. Colorado School of Mines - a Golden institution since 1874 - is an important part of that story, and Orediggers of yore made sure the time capsule included plenty of Mines memorabilia. The new time capsule, to be opened in 2068, will be buried in 2019 and the museum is currently accepting submissions.
