Ovako reports successful use of hydrogen to heat steel before rolling

Swedish special steel producer Ovako has used hydrogen to heat steel before rolling for the first time, the company announced on Tuesday April 28.

It claims to be the first company in the world to heat steel using hydrogen instead of liquefied petroleum gas before rolling, in a full-scale trial with its partner Linde Gas.
Good results were achieved in the trial in one of the company's pit furnaces at the Hofors rolling mill in Sweden, Ovako said, adding that later testing showed that the quality of the steel was not affected.
