Par?? authorities to order 50% production cut at Alunorte alumina refinery

Brazil's environment secretariat in Par?? state says it will order Norsk Hydro to halve production at its Alunorte alumina refinery due to non-compliance with a resolution issued late last week, the Norwegian aluminium producer said on Monday February 26.

The Secretariat of Environment and Sustainability in the Brazilian state of Par?? (SEMAS) said Alunorte, which is located in Par??, Brazil, does not comply with a resolution to achieve a freeboard of 1 meter in its bauxite residue deposit, DRS1. In addition, SEMAS will order the Paragominas bauxite mine, which is situated about 70km from the municipality of Paragominas in northeastern Par??, to suspend operations at one of two tailing dams at the plant.
