Pebble copper-gold mine in Alaska gets green light

A long-delayed Alaskan mine that could be one of the biggest copper and gold producers in the United States has gained final environmental approval.

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) concluded on Friday July 24 that the mine on state land in the Bristol Bay Region of southwest Alaska poses no environmental threat.
It will be at least six or seven years before mining of the 7.5 billion tonne copper-gold-molybdenum porphyry deposit commences, but the developers said the environmental impact statement is "the most significant milestone in the project's history".
