Peru's copper, zinc miners look to end of lockdown

Miners are cautious about a full ramp-up in production even as Peru's Covid-19 pandemic-related state of emergency is expected to lift after Sunday April 26.

An immediate ramp-up to pre-quarantine levels will not be possible for small to mid-size miners in Peru, a producer told Fastmarkets, given that restrictions on the movement of people as well as logistical disruptions are expected to continue even after the shutdown ends.
Peruvian miner Buenaventura had to limit its lead-zinc-copper operations due to the government shutdown, which "paralyzed operations of our productive units," a company spokesperson said, adding that a resulting force majeure situation on March 30 "will continue affecting the deliveries scheduled under our current sales contract."

Lead-zinc miner Volcan, which runs 12 mines and eight concentrate treatment plants in Peru, noted that "mining and fishing are the main industries of Peru," and the company...
