Reports of curbs on Australian copper send jitters through Chinese market

China's copper industry is bracing itself for another ban on raw materials imports after escalating trade tensions with Australia led to reports of the potential cessation of trade in the red metal between the two nations.

A report in the daily South China Morning Post newspaper cited multiple unnamed sources who claimed that a ban on imports of Australian copper ores and concentrate will be introduced this week.
The report follows the recent verbal instruction by the authorities to Chinese steel mills and power plants to halt coal imports from Australia.
Three executives at major Chinese smelters contacted to by Fastmarkets today said they were yet to receive any formal or informal notification by the government, but expected to receive clarity on the issue soon.
