Retail Earnings, Consumer Spending Data to Steer Post-Holiday Trade

Consumer spending data hits Wall Street on the final trading day of May

Next week will be a short one for traders due to the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, but there's plenty of data due out over the four-day stretch -- including key reports on gross domestic product (GDP), consumer sentiment, and inflation. Additionally, another round of retail earnings reports will be sprinkled throughout the week, including Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), Costco Wholesale (COST), Gap (GPS), and Ulta Beauty (ULTA).

Below is a brief list of some key market events scheduled for the upcoming week. All earnings dates listed below are tentative and subject to change. Please check with each company's respective website for official reporting dates.

On Monday, May 27, U.S. markets will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

The action will pick back up on Tuesday, May 28, with the release of the Conference Board's consumer confidence index and the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index. Momo (MOMO), Nio (NIO), and Workday (WDAY) will all step into the earnings confessional.

There are no major economic reports due out on Wednesday, May 29, but traders will hear earnings reports from Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), Baozun (BZUN), Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS), Palo Alto Networks (PANW), and Veeva Systems (VEEV).

Economic data returns on Thursday, May 30, with the preliminary first-quarter GDP, jobless claims, advance international trade data, pending home sales, and the weekly crude inventories report. Canadian Solar (CSIQ), Costco (COST), Dell (DELL), Dollar General (DG), Dollar Tree (DLTR), Gap (GPS), Marvell Technology Group (MRVL), Nutanix (NTNX), Okta (OKTA), Red Robin Gourmet Burgers (RRGB), Ulta Beauty (ULTA), VMware (VMW), and Zscaler (ZS) are all slated to release earnings.

The shortened week will end on Friday, May 31, with data on personal income and consumer spending, the personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index, the Chicago purchasing managers index (PMI), and the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index. Plus, Genesco (GCO) will report quarterly earnings, and a speech from New York Fed President John Williams is on the docket.
