Reviewed safeguard measures put European steel industry at risk, Eurofer says

Reviewed safeguard measures proposed by the European Commission (EC) disregard the sharp drop in European steel demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic, putting the industry at further risk, the chief executive officers of the EU steel industry and European steel association Eurofer said in a joint statement on Monday June 8.

"The European steel industry's survival is at further, serious risk because the [EC's] steel safeguard review proposal does not consider the sharp collapse in demand following the Covid-19 pandemic. The tariff-free quota should reflect EU steel demand. The European steel sector is deeply disappointed that the Commission and many EU governments have not yet decided to consider this," the joint statement said.
