Rio Tinto to build new tellurium plant at Kennecott copper mine

Rio Tinto will begin construction on a new plant that will recover tellurium from copper refining at its Kennecott copper mine in Utah, United States, it said on Monday March 8.

Rio Tinto is investing $2.9 million in developing the plant with a capacity to produce approximately 20 tonnes per year of tellurium and expects production to start in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Global tellurium production was estimated at 490 tonnes in 2020, with China accounting for around 60% of the total output figure, the latest US Geological Survey data shows.
