Russian zinc producer OJSC Electrozinc terminates Vladikavkaz plant

OJSC Electrozinc, the second-largest industrial metallurgy enterprise in Russia, has permanently ceased operations at its plant in North Ossetia, Fastmarkets has heard.

The unit, which had been under close scrutiny from regional authorities, had already suspended operations following a fire on October 21 last year that killed one person and injured three more."The company has decided to terminate Electrozinc's activities [at Vladikavkaz] and shut down production," a spokesperson for the plant told Fastmarkets on February 7.The Vladakavkaz plant is 85 years old and was the first zinc production site in Russia. It is owned by Ural Mining & Metallurgical Co (UMMC).It has also been confirmed that the production of 16,200 tonnes of zinc ore, 10,500 tonnes of zinc-in-clinker and 1,500 tonnes of unfinished zinc product was transferred from the Vladikavkaz site to another plant in Chelyabinsk, also operated by UMMC.The material could not be processed at Vladikavkaz as a result of the October 21 fire.The plant's zinc production capacity was 110,000 tonnes per year, but only...
