RAPAPORT... Technology company Everledger has partnered with De Beers sightholder Shairu Gems Diamonds and Atit Diamond Corporation to offer more transparent data on the goods they supply, as well as a mechanism to offset their carbon footprint. The London-based business, which provides blockchain services to the diamond industry, has teamed up with the suppliers to collect, track and report real-time data on the emissions associated with their cutting and polishing processes. The information can then be used to offset the manufacturers' carbon footprint via Everledger's blockchain platform. The partnership, announced Wednesday to coincide with Earth Day, will allow Shairu and Atit to certify their energy-efficiency and renewable-sourcing efforts. Their customers can also access this data via a series of sustainability reports.Everledger chose to work with Mumbai-based Shairu and New York-based Atit because they have "demonstrated leadership...on environmental issues," said the technology company's CEO, Leanne Kemp."Using blockchain technology, we are able to trace a diamond's origin, as well as to ensure that it has been cut and polished in a LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] certified diamond-cutting facility," noted Atit's vice president, Atit Mehta.Image: Polished diamonds.
