SMM Lead Zinc Summit: Tyre market propels zinc oxide industry

NANNING, May 25 (SMM) – China's growth into the world's largest consumer of auto tyres since 2016 is of great significance to the domestic zinc oxide industry, said Wang Yanlong, chairman of Orlon Zinc Corporation in Weifang of Shandong province.

He believes that the tyre industry will be dominated by current, leading companies as well as new, larger firms that will emerge. Half of the output of zinc oxide in China is used to produce rubber products such as rubber tyres, Wang said at the SMM Lead Zinc Summit on Friday May 25 in Nanning, Guangxi.

Zinc oxide functions as an activator in the curing process for rubber. It strengthens rubber compounds and improves their resistance to heat and friction, he explained.

China's output of auto tyres climbed steadily to 653 million units in 2017, from 443 million units in 2010, he added.
