South American flat steel import market down on lower Chinese prices

Prices for flat-rolled steel products imported into South America were down in the week ended Friday July 2 because of lower prices on an fob basis in China, and with fewer offers in the market while mills prepared for September-shipment negotiations.

Fastmarkets' price assessment for steel plate, import, cfr main ports South America, was $990-1,000 per tonne on Friday, down by $20-80 per tonne in comparison with $1,010-1,080 per tonne a week before.
Market participants expected new material from China to change hands on the Pacific coast at $980-985 per tonne, while the most recent offers had been issued at $990-1,000 per tonne.
