South32 boosts manganese outlook by 8% in 2018 after Q2 output rises

Production of manganese ore at South32's South Africa Manganese operation rose by 28% quarter on quarter and 22% on an annual basis in the second fiscal quarter ended December 31, 2017, the company said last week.

South Africa Manganese produced 633,000 tonnes of manganese ore in the December quarter last year, up from 517,000 tonnes in the same period of 2016. This brought total output for the half-year ended December 31 to 1.13 million tonnes, representing an increase of 21% from the prior year. The company's manganese ore sales in South Africa grew 2% quarter on quarter, reaching 539,000 tonnes in the fiscal second quarter of 2018.
