Spanish crude steel production falls amid 2018 import surge, Unesid says

Spanish crude steel production fell to 14.3 million tonnes in 2018, marginally down from 14.4 million tonnes in 2017, according to Unesid, the country's steel association.

Domestic steel consumption in Spain rose by 12.6% year on year to 14.3 million tonnes in 2018."This significant rise [in consumption] was influenced by the better market conditions, but also by the notable rise in imports from third countries, trying to anticipate the exhaustion of the quota imposed by the [EU] safeguard and a review of the 2017 foreign trade data," Unesid said.The European Commission (EC) imposed preliminary measures in its safeguard case in July 2018, in the form of tariff rate quotas on 23 steel product categories, based on average import volumes over the past three years.The...
