Froneman, who took the helm in January 2013 and transformed Sibanye-Stillwater from a 1.5 million ounce South Africa-based gold producer into an international miner ranking among the world's top three PGM producers, received the 2021 Brigadier Stokes award last week during SAIMM's online AGM.

"When I look at the list of past recipients comprising eminent individuals who have left an indelible mark on the South African mining industry, I feel deeply humbled to be joining such august company," he said.

SAIMM member Professor Alex du Plessis said Froneman "brought a notably entrepreneurial and technically innovative approach to mining in South Africa".

Marikana memorial

Froneman is scheduled to make the closing remarks tomorrow at the company's second annual Marikana Memorial Lecture, to acknowledge the 2012 massacre at the operation it acquired from Lonmin in 2019.

Mineral resources and energy minister Gwede Mantashe, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba and Reimagine SA director Luvuyo Madasa are also set to speak, while activist, doctor and businesswoman Dr Mamphela Ramphele is the keynote speaker.
