Stagnant demand from aerospace sector adds pressure on chromium metal producers

The chromium metal market is facing oversupply after orders from the aerospace sector stalled, resulting in increased competition for business among suppliers, sources told Fastmarkets.

Chromium metal in its higher purity is used to create a variety of superalloy components including turbine blades for the aerospace industry, due to its high resistance to corrosion.
"Demand [from aerospace] is down 40-50%," a chromium metal producer said. "This is in line with the 40% reduction stated by Airbus."
In April, Europe's largest airplane manufacturer, Airbus, said it will cut production of its core three aircraft models by roughly a third.
