The Coming Financial Crisis of 2021: Steve Keen Issues New Warning

By Peak Prosperity / October 20, 2016 / marketsanity.com / Article Link

Economist Steve Keen predicts that even if the covid-19 health crisis subsides next year, a brewing financial crisis on par with the 2008 Great Recession is in the making. He sees the pandemic as having delivered an "unprecedented shock" to the global economy, and the response from authorities as nothing less than a "catastrophe". With tens of millions of households having lost their income this year, personal savings becoming exhausted, government support programs on their way to drying up, and lots more company layoffs/bankruptcies/closures ahead - Steve expects a punishing recession to arrive in full force in 2021. And on a larger scale, he sees modern neoclassical economics - which ignores the importance of natural resources and the health of our ecosystems - as completely unsuited for the reality in which we live today. He warns that if we don't adapt a more informed approach to managing the global economy, we will only continue to make the mess we're in worse.

Steve Keen is an Australian-born, British-based economist and author of the book Debunking Economics. He considers himself a post-Keynesian, criticising neoclassical economics as inconsistent, unscientific and empirically unsupported. Keen was formerly an associate professor of economics at University of Western Sydney, until he applied for voluntary redundancy in 2013, due to the closure of the economics program at the university. In autumn 2014 he became a professor and Head of the School of Economics, History and Politics at Kingston University in London. He is also a fellow at the Centre for Policy Development.

Adam Taggart is the President and Co-Founder of Peak Prosperity. He wears many hats, but his basic job is to handle the business side of things so that his fellow co-founder, Chris Martenson, is free to think and write. Adam is an experienced Silicon Valley internet executive and Stanford MBA. Prior to partnering with Chris (Adam was General Manager of our earlier site, ChrisMartenson.com), he was a Vice President at Yahoo!, a company he served for nine years. Before that, he did the 'startup thing' (mySimon.com, sold to CNET in 2001). As a fresh-faced graduate from Brown University in the early 1990s, Adam got a first-hand look at all that was broken with Wall Street as an investment banking analyst for Merrill Lynch. Most importantly, he's a devoted husband and dad.
