The U.S.’s merchandise-trade deficit unexpectedly grew to $71.6 billion in December from a revised $70 billion the prior month, marking the widest gap since July 2008, preliminary figures from the Commerce Department showed Friday. The median estimate of economists in a Bloomberg survey forecast a deficit of $68.9 billion. America’s shortfall with the world has been a sticking point with President Donald Trump, who has sought to reduce it with policies that some have called protectionist.
